Green Juice Detox – All You Need To Know

green juice detoxFor many, the term “detox” makes them want to run to the hills and hide from a society that they feel has failed them. While that may sound a bit overly dramatic, the truth is, the word “detox” has become a rather trendy term often used by people who participate in “fad diets.” But sometimes the word “fad” is a word used to insult someone who is just trying to make health work. So what about that green juice detox we all keep hearing about? And what is a green detox juice?

Being healthy is tough business. Our world inundates us with all kinds of toxicity and food and drink choices which really do harm our overall health profiles. Often times, we feel the best way to start a diet or healthy lifestyle change is to “detox,” or hit the gates running like mad men and mad women. Mentally, it can motivate us. For those who choose to take on a green drink detox, the appeal might be in the mentality that follows.

After a “detox” of any sort, just the mere act of eating (even super healthy) feels like heaven. The green detox juice diet sort of tricks us into thinking that a strict diet is “fun.” For the record, I am going to try to stop using the “quotes” symbols. Its hurting me, as well.

Why Green Juice Detox?

In a world of fad diets and trendy foods, leafy greens stand alone as the pillar of health. At no time in history have we looked at leafy greens, green tea or any green juices as anything other than uber-healthy. Greens give us everything we need to fuel a healthy heart, fight cancer and break down free radicals that age our skin.

Part of the fascination with a detox in general is that you stop ingesting toxic processed foods and drinks. When you drink water and green drinks, you flush the body’s cells of those past built up toxins. When you take in super greens, you also take in nutrients which help infuse your body with health and joy.

When I say Green Juice Detox, I mean…

The big question, when it comes to a green detox Juice, is what greens are we talking about and how do we make them?
Here’s a good starting list:

Spinach: Vitamins K, E, A, C, Protein, Thiamin, Fiber, Copper, Potassium and so much more.
green juice detoxKale: Fiber, Vitamins K, A, C, Magnesium, Riboflavin, Phosphorous, Zinc and much more.
Green tea: Caffeine, L-Theanine, Improved brain function, Polyphenols, Flavonoids, Catechins.
Avocado: Healthy monosaturated fats, B-6, Folate, Niacin
Swiss Chard: Vitamins K, A, C, Magnesium, Copper, Iron.
Apples: Fiber, Antioxidants, Phytonutrients, Flavonoids.
Celery: Vitamin C, Potassium, Folate.
Limes: Improves digestion, Scurvy prevention, Constipation relief, Helps with gout.
Cucumbers: B1, B5, B7, Helps with stress.
Cilantro: Potassium, Phosphorous, Zinc, Calcium.

That’s a lot of superfood green power. But the question now is, how do we make a green drink from it?

Well, there are two ways.

You have lots of time to make a green detox juice way.

The first thing you will need to do is buy a juicer. I am not a strong advocate for juicing everything, I think fiber is one of the healthiest things people can take in; but, some of these aren’t so practical to put into a blender. Juicing the spinach, swiss chard and kale will help you make better use of it.

Choose one of those leafy greens (swiss chard, kale, spinach) or as many as you like. Next, choose a base: The avocado will definitely work here. But you will likely need a second base depending on your green drink tolerance. You hae two choices, you can either buy almond milk with no added sugar, or use water. If you use water, you will get a super earthy taste. The almond milk will add a creamy layer that will neutralize some of that green earthy taste.

Next, mix and match as desired on the rest of them. I personally love adding cucumbers and cilantro. This truly is up to you. You have to experiment. Put them in a blender and then pour in a glass and enjoy. Through experimentation, you will find what you really love.

The Convenient Green Detox Juice Method

Honestly, going to the grocery store, storing green vegetables and fruits, then cleaning them, and then preparing them, is a lot of work. Juicing is a horrendous time-consumer (wait until you have to clean that thing). The convenient way is to buy some green drinks that are already prepared for you. You can check out our top superfood green drink reviews, or hit up your local store. If you choose to go to your local store, use your smartphone to Google the ones you are considering purchasing. There are a lot of flops out there.

How do I Green Drink Detox?

In all honesty, I don’t buy into the green drink detox, I believe its really harsh and lends itself to a yo-yo health effect. People who maintain weight loss do so by learning consistent behaviors. Lifestyle changes trump extreme detoxes. Buy a superfood green drink once a month. Make sure you drink one each day. Create a powerful, healthy habit. Replace one meal per day with your green drink rather than getting involved with days of just ingesting green drinks. One thing to note: not all green drinks are intended for meal replacements. Look for ones that have protein. Kylea’s Total Living Drink Greens comes to mind, which can be ordered conveniently online; or, just go to the store and make sure the green drink powder you order has the needed protein.

Protein acts as a filler for our appetites. It can help us feel more full and satisfied. It slows down absorption of carbs. You really want protein for a meal replacement.

Did I talk you out of the Green Detox Juice diet? I’m sorry…

My intention wasn’t to rain on your green drink detox parade. My intention was to give you more options. Advising someone on how to approach an extreme form of dieting isn’t the business we are into. If you do choose to take on a green drink detox, make darn sure you check with your doctor and have him or her monitor you. And always remember, slow and steady and consistent wins the race.
